Description

Boccale Orvieto, XIII–XIV secolo ,

Archaic majolica decorated in two-colour fire. Height 25 cm. Conservation: cracks in the upper part reassembled during restoration with some additions. A mug with a globular body, a high neck with a ribbon top rim, angled, a three-lobed mouth and a wide ribbon handle with three thin relief beads. The decoration, drawn in manganese brown and coloured in copper green, shows a braid motif on the neck and a play of interlaced bands on the belly. Similar archaic maiolica mugs, considered to be of Orvieto production, belong to the collection of the Faenza museum (see C.Fiocco, G.Gherardi, Ceramiche Umbre dal Medioevo allo Storicismo, Faenza 1988, pp.187-191, nn.18-27).
