Description

A large cobalt-blue underglaze porcelain dish known as Kraak, China for export, Wanli period, early 17th centuryCentrally decorated with a perfume burner surmounted by a chimera, a vase of flowers and lingzhi mushrooms, a planter with a mossy pierced rock, and a painting of a carp in the waves. The flared and scalloped border, the wing decorated with eight alternating painted panels of Buddhist objects, peony flowers and fruit branches, surrounded by a brocade and knotted ribbon motif. The reverse of the wing has the same radiating arrangement with two highly stylized lingzhi mushroom motifs, typical of this style of porcelain and symbols of immortality. The unglazed base.
