Description

LECLERC, J. Description du Pays Armorique, à prés. Bretaigne. Paris, 1631. Black and white. Nice copy. Paper slightly yellowed. 353 x 470 mm. Map published in the "Théâtre géographique du royaume de France" by Leclerc. Decorated with coats of arms and 3 compass roses. French text on the reverse. This map is a new engraving based on the map published in Bertrand d'Argentré's "Histoire de Bretagne". It was taken again in 1619 and 1631 by Leclerc in his "Théâtre géographique du royaume de France". Leclerc's "Geographical Theatre of France" is an extension of Bouguereau's "Theatre". Refugee with his family in Tours during the troubles of the League, he would then have worked with M. Bouguereau. The latter left no trace after 1596, but the boards of his "Theatre" passed, in circumstances still unknown, into the hands of J. Leclerc. - C. Gaudillat, Cartes anciennes de la Bretagne 1582-1800, n°7.
