Description

Two Persian bronze spoons - Kafche Cast brass Iran, Khorassan, 12th-13th century Height of the larger one : 20 cm The first one consists of a long stem ending in a fine point, and a diamond-shaped spoon with cut sides. The back of the spoon is finely engraved with plant motifs and interlacing in cartouches and two fish on the outer sides. Beautiful red and green patina. The second one is engraved on the back of the spoon with winged female figures and vegetal motifs in cartouches. The pointed end of the stem is missing. The unusual shape of the spoons suggests that these objects had a more specific purpose than a traditional spoon, and may be reminiscent of objects such as indigo crucibles. For an example of a spoon from the same period, see: Melikian-Chirvani A. S. (1982), Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, London: HMSO, p. 125, no. 54. (One is slightly missing).
