Songye statue, Democratic Republic of the Congo Wood and metal H. 37 cm Songye figure, Democratic Republic of the Congo H. 14 ½ in Provenance: - Collection Jacques and Denise Schwob (1916-2008), Brussels, then by descent Songye statuette featuring a standing figure with his hands placed on his abdomen. Displaying the classical characteristics of Songye art, the sculpture is dominated by an imposing spherical head perched on a thick cylindrical neck. The narrow shoulders, carved at right angles, are extended by long digitate hands. The chest is small, the abdomen is rounded, and the legs are short. The feet of the statuette, disproportionately long, protrude from the cylindrical base. The significant erosion, the presence of ancient magical charges and the general patina of the object attest to its age.
