NOK HEAD, NIGERIA Period: 4th century BC - 4th century AD (ASA Laboratory, 2 February 1993, ref. 112328) Terracotta with red ochre slip, quartz and mica inclusion l. 26 cm Nok head, Nigeria L. 10 ¼ in Provenance: - Lance Entwistle Gallery, London - Private collection Of large dimensions, this face with almond-shaped eyes widely open under a thin arch of the eyebrows, is made particularly expressive by the treatment of the open mouth revealing a row of teeth. The memory of a moustache and laterally the evocation of a hairstyle are still visible. The granular earth is mixed with tiny shards of brilliant quartz and mica. A great presence emanates from this face with powerful features.
