Ritual drum handle, Eskimo, Thule Civilization, Canada 18th or 19th century Bone L. 11.5 cm Eskimo ritual drum handle, Thule Civilization, Canada L. 4 ½ in 20,000/30,000 Provenance: - Galerie Yann Ferrandin - French private collection Beautiful ritual drum handle carved at the end with a strikingly expressive human head, mouth open to let the tongue out, round hollowed out eyes probably once set with beads or pyrites. The handle is decorated with carvings of stylized figures. A notch and two holes were used to attach the wooden frame of the tambourine.
