Description

Arrow straightener, probably Thule Early Eskimo, 18th century or earlier Marine ivory H. 13 cm - W. 3 cm Arrow straightener, probably Thule H. 5 1/8 in - W. 1 1/8 in Provenance: - Former private collection, France This amulet depicts a human body (probably a pregnant woman) surmounted by an animal head (with an eye visible at the top of the figure). The surface shows deep marks of use and wear, the superb patina suggesting a prolonged stay in the permafrost. An esoteric figure if ever there was one, this work of shamanic transformation also served as a tool. The triangular opening at the top is reminiscent of the hole used to straighten arrows. The lower part of the tool (belly and legs) allows an excellent grip. The extraordinary technical know-how, perfected generation after generation for thousands of years, is the guarantee of survival in the hostile environment of the polar regions. This sculpture illustrates the perfect alchemy between form, function and the shamanic thought system.
