Amsterdam, et se trouve à Paris, chez Durand Neveu, 1782. 4 volumes bound in 2 volumes in-12 of 248-240 (cipher. 242)-229 (cipher. 231)-1bl.-255 (cipher. 257)-[1] pages, granite calf, spine decorated (contemporary binding) Written entirely in the form of letters, this book caused such a scandal on its publication that its author was blacklisted and excluded from the salons of the capital. Benefiting from a lightning success, there were no less than 16 printings under the same date and it was even condemned by the courts during the 19th century. Extremely rare first edition (print run A) with all the characteristics indicated by M. Brun (Title, Madame de Metteuil instead of Madame de Merteuil on the 10th line of p. 155 of volume I, and the errata on the verso of the last page of volume IV). The false titles of the last 3 volumes have not been bound in this copy, tear without missing page 145 of the third part, very small burn without missing page 199 of the last volume. Well executed restorations to spine and boards. (In French in the text n° 174).
