Henry EDRIDGE (Britannique, 1768-1821) et John MIERS (Britannique, 1758-1821)

Double portrait of a gentleman. Oval painted miniature on ivory, unsigned, depicting a gentleman in three-quarter bust to the right, seated, holding his head with his left hand, encircled with gold bas-titre and bordered by a frieze of braided hair. The back shows a silhouette painted on ivory in the left profile of a man, probably the same, signed lower left "Miers", surrounded by translucent blue enamel with radiating guilloche decoration. Good condition. H : 6 and 3 cm - W : 5,2 and 3,2 cm Frame : H : 8,5 - W : 7,5 cm Literature : The workshop of John Miers was specialized in the production of silhouettes intended to be inlaid in jewels, they were painted by John Miers himself and his associate John Field. Many of Field's works were signed Miers and the distinctions between the signatures are discussed in detail in: S. McKechnie, "British Silhouette Artists and their Work 1760-1860", p. 690, ills. 700-701, pl. 1496-1507. On the basis of this research, the present silhouette is attributed to John Miers.
