Portrait of King Charles I of England (1600-1649). Oval medallion carved on tortoise shell, representing him in right profile in armour after a medal by John Roettiers of 1670, monogrammed on the left "OB". H: 7.1 - W: 5.2 cm Related work: An identical medallion with the profile of Charles I on horn, monogrammed OB, is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and illustrated in Arthur Mayne's British profile miniaturists, 1970, p. 24. History: John Obrisset is considered to be the first manufacturer of horn and tortoiseshell boxes. Son of Jean Aubrisset, an ivory carver in Dieppe, he was a Huguenot not belonging to any guild but many portraits bearing his monogram are recorded, notably in museum collections, with a specialization in royal portraits from Charles I to George II.
