History Marie-Thérèse-Charlotte of France, nicknamed "Madame Royale", was the first child of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette. As the only royal child to survive the French Revolution, she was exiled until the Bourbons returned to the throne in 1814. This portrait was probably executed at Hartwell Castle in England, where she had resided since 1807, notably with Louis XVIII. Condemned to a new exile in 1830, she died in 1851 far from her country. "Madame Royale" had a profound effect on some of the minds of her time: Chateaubriand wrote of her: "her sufferings rose so high that they became one of the greatness of the Revolution". Similarly, the Duchess of Dino stated, as early as 1833, "she is, unquestionably, the person most pursued by fate that history can offer. » Lot appraised by the De Bayser firm.
