Landwehr, Low Countries, n°92 - Praz, p. 300. First edition of this collection of emblems by Jacob Cats (1577-1660), a great Dutch poet and one of the major figures of emblematic literature. Quadrilingual text, in Dutch, Latin, French and English. Beautiful engraved intaglio illustration, includes a very fine unsigned title-frontispiece, 96 circular emblems engraved by J. Sweelinck after A. van de Venne, 2 portraits of Galathée and Phyllis, engraved by Crispin de Passe and J. Matham, and 4 out-of-text figures. From the Roger Paultre library, with his bookplate (1993, n°56). Freckles, wetness at the corner of some quires. Tear without missing on the first leaf and on leaves S2 and Ss3. Angular paper loss on folio M1. False title stained.
