CAVALIERI (Giovanni Battista) et Tomasz TRETER.

Romanorum imperatorum effigies. Rome, Vincenzo Accolti, 1583. In-8, fawn calf, framed with two double fillets, rich gilt decoration consisting of an oval azure iron in the centre, surrounded by a scattering of small fleurs-de-lis and a cornucopia in the corners pouring flowers and fruits with a bird, smooth spine decorated with a scattering of fleurs-de-lis, gilt edges (Binding of the time). First edition of this work devoted to the Roman emperors, from Julius Caesar to Rudolf II (1552-1616), emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. It is illustrated with an architectural title-frontispiece, 2 full-page plates of coats of arms (those of Cavalieri, and those of King Stephen I of Poland and Prince of Transylvania, to whom the work is dedicated), and 157 portraits spread over 151 plates, all engraved on copper by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri. Each plate is accompanied by a biographical note written by Tomasz Treter (1547-1610), Polish historian and theologian. VERY NICE CONTEMPORARY BINDING, REMARKABLE FOR ITS LARGE FLOWERED HORNS OF PLENTY IN WHICH BIRDS ARE FLAPPING. Some brown spots. Spine and corners skilfully rebound. Renewed endpapers.
