Description

PROSPER D'AQUITAINE (Saint).

Opera. Douai, Jean Bogard, 1577. In-8, cold-stamped sow skin, framed with fillets and a scroll with vegetal decoration, in the centre of the first plate stamped in black, with, stamped above the initials IBG and below the date 1591, laces, spine ribbed, black edges (Binding of the time). Edition printed in Douai by Jean Bogard, one of the first typographers of the city and founder of a famous dynasty of Douai printers. His typographical mark appears on the title. Saint Prosper of Aquitaine, a 5th century theologian, was a disciple of Saint Augustine. LATE SIXTEENTH CENTURY BINDING, DECORATED WITH A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL PLATE SHOWING SAMSON FIGHTING THE LION. This plate, printed in black, bears at the foot this legend: De dome dente ex. The binding is dated 1591 and the initials IBG stamped on the first board are certainly those of the first owner of the volume. Handwritten note of the time on the first counterplate, numerous underlining in green ink, some marginal annotations. Armorial bookplate of Lucien d'Ursin d'Anvers. Some light foxing, halo on the lower corner of the title. Angular restoration to folio S4.
