Description

ESTIENNE (Henri).

Epigrammata graeca, selecta ex anthologia. S.l. Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1570. 8 pages, grained basane, cold fillet, smooth spine decorated, green title page, spotted edges (Binding of the beginning of the 19th century). Renouard, Estienne, p. 134, n°4. - Schreiber, n°177. Partly original edition of this collection of Greek epigrams, enriched with Latin translations and poems of the author's own invention. This publication earned Estienne an imprisonment, because he had printed it without authorization, and was mutilated by the Council of Geneva. A handwritten note attributes the binding to Noël, of Besançon, Derome's best pupil. Stamp of the Bibliotheca Rilliana on the title and handwritten ex-dono on the same leaf: Antonius Guernerus Cuno Brunsvicensis anno 1657 dono dedit Melchioris... Helmstadj (Anton Werner Cuno (1635-1707), German pedagogue and philologist, whose library was dispersed in 1707). Restoration at the bottom of the title page making an ex-libris illegible. Corners rubbed.
