Description

MANUCE (Paul).

Antiquitatum romanarum. Liber de legibus. Paris, Bernardo Torresano, 1557. In-8, supple vellum overlay, smooth spine, traces of binding, gilt edges (Binding of the time). Renouard, Aldus, p. 297, n°9. Reissue, on the same date as the original, of Paul Manutius' tetralogy on antiquities, the only part published in his lifetime. This edition was printed in Paris for the bookseller Bernardo Torresano, grandson of Aldus' successor, Andrea d'Asola. Torresano practised in Paris from 1554 to 1571, and then in Venice, to which he returned after a decline in his Parisian clientele, perhaps due to the distribution of forbidden books, if we take into account Brantôme's comments about him. Old handwritten bookplates crossed out on the title. Old notes and underlining. From the library of R. de La Loge (late 19th century bookplate). Superficial worm work on the second cover of the binding.
