In-folio, brown calf on cold decorated aisle, fillets and two large ornamented scrolls framing a central compartmented panel decorated with a scroll and three small repeated fleurons, at the head of said panel a compartment with initials (here scratched) and at the foot the date 1558, remains of chased brass clasps, spine decorated with cold, blue edges (Period binding) PRINCEPS EDITION of the philosophical texts of Philo of Alexandria, known as Philo the Jew (1st century CE). Beautiful impression by Adrien Turnèbe: he had obtained in 1551, following the hasty departure of Robert Estienne for Geneva, the title of royal printer for Greek. STAMPED BINDING DATED 1558, DECORATED WITH AN ATTRACTIVE DECORATION OF ROULETTES INCLUDING ALLEGORICAL EFFIGIES OF JUSTICE, PRUDENCE, CHARITY, FIDELITY, FORTUNE AND HOPE. Stamp on the title of the College of Brandenburg, Germany. From the Furstenberg-Beaumesnil library (2013, n°145). Wormholes in the blank of the title and in the margins of the following leaf, small light wetness to a few quires, some spotting. Copy placed in the binding, spine rebacked, endpapers renewed, spotting on the second board.
