Description

CICERON.

De natura deorum. De divinatione. De fato. De legibus. S.l.n.d. [at the end] : Florence, Philippe Junte, 1516. In-8, brown morocco, antique gilt decoration consisting of a set of fillets and a roulette drawing a central rectangular panel decorated with various irons, mention struck at the top of the first plate C. DE NA A DEORU, spine gilt, gilt and chased edges (Binding of the period). Florentine edition of Cicero's philosophical works, printed in italic type. BEAUTIFUL ITALIAN BINDING OF THE TIME. It can be compared with the binding of the Cicero edited in Florence by Junte in 1515 reproduced in the Henry Davis Gift catalogue, vol. III, n°257, and which Mirjam Foot thinks to have been executed in Venice or Bologna: we find the same small six-pointed iron drawing a stylized flower, which, on our binding, is stamped in the center. The mention C. DE NA A DEORU struck at the head is a contraction of the author's name and the title: Cicero De natura deorum. Stains on some leaves, some foxing. Repairs to the headpieces.
