Description

LEONARDUS DE UTINO.

Sermones floridi de tempore. S.l.n.d. Lyon, Jean Trechshel, 15 July 1496]. In-4 gothic, calf overturned on ais, remains of clasps with crimson velvet fasteners, spine ribbed (Binding of the time). HC, 16139 - GW, M17875. - Goff, L-142. - Renouard, Bade, t. III, p. 312. Incunabula edition from Lyon of these sermons by Leonard of Udine, disciple of Saint Thomas Aquinas and great Dominican preacher of the 15th century. Printed in small gothic type on two columns, it was given by the humanist Josse Bade who, at the time, was a proofreader in the printing house of Trechsel, his father-in-law. The latter's typographical mark adorns the last leaf. EXAMPLE IN UNRESTATED EARLY BOOKBINDING, bearing on the title the handwritten ex-libris of a student of canon law: hic liber est Bernardini Hernandez bachalaurei. Without the last leaf, blank. Slight foxing and spotting. Lower hinge cracked on the height of two boxes, missing the upper cap. The spine was formerly covered with a skin (common practice in the eighteenth century to standardize library volumes) which has been removed.
