Composed in Latin by the physician and humanist Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), the Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most important German books of the fifteenth century and certainly remains the most famous of the incunabula, notably because of the scope of its editorial project and the quality of its production. The author talks about the foundation of the Church, secular history, antiquity, historical and legendary events, discoveries, etc. Printed in gothic type on two columns, the edition is illustrated with about 1800 portraits, subjects, maps and city views, including those of Germany remarkable for their accuracy, executed by Michel Wolgemuth, Dürer's master, and by Wilhelm Pleydenwurff; 2 double-page maps, a world map and the map of Northern and Central Europe, are included in the pagination. A complete copy of the De sarmacia regione Europe (5 ff.) and the three blank leaves (ff. 259-260 and 261). Some leaves are printed on strong paper. Stamp in purple ink on the title which is in facsimile. At the end, the 2 leaves containing the map of Europe have been bound in after the last 5 unnumbered leaves.
