PAULUS VENETUS.

[Logica]. Conspiciens in circuitu librorum... S.l.n.d. [at colophon] : Milan, Christophorus Valdarfer, 14 December 1474. In-4, green half-maroquin with long grain, smooth spine decorated (Binding around 1800). HC, 12500. - GW, M30327. - Goff, P-220. A MILANESE INCUNABLE OF THE GREATEST RARITY, of which only about fifteen copies are known to exist in public collections. It dates from 1474, three years after the introduction of printing in Milan. Second edition, given by Boninus Mombritius, of this treatise on logic by Paul of Venice (1369-1429), philosopher, theologian and metaphysician of the order of St. Augustine, whose editio princeps would have been printed in Padua, in 1472. Printed in Roman type on two columns, it came from the press of Christophorus Valdarfer, a typographer who was first active in Venice around 1470-1471. A rubricated copy, with several initials embellished with pink or purple watermark decoration; the INITIAL OF THE INCIPIT is painted and depicts a hooded monk holding a book. Undetermined wet stamp on one endpaper. Marginal stains to a few leaves.
