Description

Flämische Skulptur

Madonna with child. Boxwood with original frame and gilding, mounted on later fabric covered metal base. (Last quarter of the 17th century). Height 12,8 cm. The standing Virgin Mary holds the infant Jesus on her left arm, which is depicted in a twisted posture, holding an apple in her left hand. The group can be compared with the ivory group of an apocalyptic Madonna with Child on the Crescent Moon in the Rijksmuseum, which is attributed to Matthieu van Beveren (1630-1690) (inv. no. BK-1962-5). Especially the face type and the moving folds of the floor-length cloak show great similarities. - Minor losses, otherwise in good condition.
