GRZEGORZ ROSINSKI THE GREAT POWER OF THE CHNINKEL Casterman 1988 Original plate n° 10, prepublished in (À Suivre) n° 105 of october 1986. Indian ink, grease pencils, pastel highlights and white gouache on paper 36.2 × 50.1 cm (14.25 × 19.72 in.) With Le Grand Pouvoir du Chninkel, Rosinski and Van Hamme enter the pages of (À Suivre), the great magazine of the 1980s that makes Casterman, until then the youth publisher of Tintin and Alix, make a decisive change of direction. The project was to create large-format stories where the breath of great literature could be felt. In response, Van Hamme and Rosinski proposed nothing less than a disenchanted reinterpretation of the Bible mixed with Tolkien's paganism, in which the Chninkels embodied, in a way, according to the scriptwriter, the Jewish people. With a chosen one, J'on, who goes through many trials as in this splendid scene where he is confronted with terrifying scavengers. This is one of the first masterpieces in the since very popular register of graphic novels. Impossible while looking at this plate not to tremble for this unfortunate chninkel. A summit of graphic sound effects. Jean Van Hamme
