This oil on cardboard was painted by Henri Le Sidaner on 21 July 1899, in Bruges. It served as a study for a painting of the same name that the artist delivered on 28 September to his dealer Georges Petit, with whom he had just signed an exclusive contract. It was in Bruges that Le Sidaner really found the direction of his art: "It was there," wrote Camille Mauclair, "that he began to be completely himself.
This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Yann Farinaux-Le Sidaner who will include it in the supplement to the Catalogue raisonné "Le Sidaner - L'oeuvre peint et gravé" currently in preparation.
