Description

Les Voyages au théâtre / Le Tour du Monde en 80 jours, Les Enfants du capitaine Grant, Michel Strogoff, by A. d'Ennery and Jules Verne. Illustration by Benett and Meyer. Paris, J. Hetzel et Cie, Éditeurs, sd (1881). Small in-8°. Publisher's "special theatre" type 2 full cobalt blue percaline boards. No mention of the binder. Gilt edges. Chamois coloured endpapers. Printed by Gauthier-Villars. Catalogue "AQ" for 1881-1882. First hardback and first issue of the first printing (error in the numbering on pages 273 and 344). Covers skilfully restored. Note that the textbooks are very slightly out of order. Otherwise, a fine copy of this extremely rare type 2 binding. Philippe Jauzac's choice to qualify it as "type 2" is disconcerting, we cannot doubt that this untraceable binding with uncorrected faults is between the famous "essay" (Jauzac pp. 349-351) and the definitive version which he calls "type 1".
