Description

Celestial Spaces] Della Terra alla Luna e Intorno alla Luna (From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon) by Giulio Verne. Illustrations by de Montaut (From the Earth to the Moon) and Emile Bayard and A. de Neuville (Around the Moon). Cover: Biblioteca di Educazione e di Ricreazione / Milano, Tipografia Editrice Lombarda. Inside: Biblioteca di Educazione e di Ricreazione / Milano, Tipografia già Domenico Salvi E C., sd (ca 1875). Large double in-8°. Publisher's full red percaline custom boards. Blue endpapers with publisher's black printed catalogue. White edges. No mention of printer or binder. Italian illustrated first edition with the same errors in the caption (pp. 25 and 32) as the French edition for From the Earth to the Moon. Traces of moisture on the boards. Old filing label at the foot of the spine. Otherwise a beautiful copy of this extremely rare hardback in France (and in Italy!). Magnificent and indispensable for collectors of personalized plates! It is good to underline that the first Italian illustrated editions have this remarkable particularity to have been conceived in the perfect line of the French personalized cartonnages. Some collectors assume, with good reason from our point of view, that the graphic design of the cover of each of these books was probably done in Paris. This volume is, however, the great absentee of the personalized cartonnages, these two titles having been published in first illustrated editions in 1868 and 1872. It should therefore have been published in France in this form in 1872 (the 5th!) instead of the first "shell" binding!
