Description

Seas and Oceans] The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. Illustrations by Férat. Paris, Bibliothèque d'Éducation et de Récréation, J. Hetzel et Cie, sd (1875). Large triple in-8°. Publisher's full havana percaline boards "with the two elephants" Engel and the cartouche in negative. Engel & Fils bookbinders. Gilt edges. Brown endpapers. Printed by Gauthier-Villars. First illustrated edition and first simultaneous binding with the personalized binding, quite accidental (cf. lot n°17), and with the one called "à la bannière", which will remain the rule for the three triple volumes until the appearance of the polychrome "dos à l'ancre". Coiffes and corners skillfully restored. Some foxing, as is often the case. Otherwise, a fine copy of this first attempt at a cartonnage with the title block in negative, here in a rare shade. Contrary to what Jauzac maintained in his bibliography, it is now accepted that, of the two Engel versions "aux deux éléphants", the first cartonnage is the one with a block in negative.
