Description

JAMMES (Francis) (1868-1938)

- Divine Art. Signed autograph manuscript, entitled "The Caves of Oxocelhaya and the Miller, or the Divine Art" (s.l.) "July 1935". 31 pages and 2 half pages in-4. In-4, half-page purple maroon with stripes, underlined with a golden net, ornate spine, gilt edges, tabbed pages, sheathed case. Beautiful set including: a typed explanatory note, 3 black & white photographs of the caves (13 x 17.8 cm) and a prospectus, these documents having belonged to Francis Jammes. Next comes the manuscript, heavily corrected and annotated (blue pencil, ink etc.), a text imbued with Catholicism in which he reviews the work of paleontologists and geologists. He then poetically evokes the discovery of these caves and describes them. Finally, we find a copy of the final text from the collection Variation dans un air français, published in the Mercure de France in 1942 (p 37 to 71). This manuscript contains variations from the first publication of this text in L'Archer, n°10, December 1935 (p 545 to 565) and from the text of the Mercure de France.
