Description

Antoine Martin GARNAUD (Paris 1796-1861)

View of the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli. Black pencil and brown wash. Signed lower left and dated 1824; annotated right "to his master". Caption at the bottom. 21 x 15.5 cm. The master of Antoine-Martin Garaud to whom these two drawings are dedicated may have been the architect Antoine-Laurent-Thomas Vaudoyer (1756-1846), whose studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts he joined in 1811 and under whose direction he was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1817. During his stay in Italy from 1817 to 1822, A-M. Garaud participated in the restoration of the Aqua Giulia aqueduct. Among his many civil and religious works carried out on his return, we can mention the tomb of the sculptor James Pradier at Père Lachaise (Cf. Marie-Laure Crosnier Le, Garnaud Antoine, biographical note. INHA).
