The original edition, published in 1767 in Utrecht, was quickly a great success and was translated into German and Danish. Daughter of the surgeon Anel, Marie-Angélique-Anel Lerebours (1731-1821) was noted for her wit and knowledge of literature and philosophy, particularly with Rousseau, Diderot and Dupont de Nemours, whom she received at home. Here she seeks to convince women to feed their children themselves, in order to avoid excess child mortality, while at the same time offering them the prospect of escaping the risk of another pregnancy for a time.
