Marbled calf, smooth spine decorated (contemporary binding). The illustration consists of a frontispiece, 2 vignettes on the titles, 20 header vignettes of portraits of the characters in the poem, 15 culs-de-lampe, 12 of which are full-page and 20 off-text plates, all by Gravelot. Original edition of the French translation by Charles-François Lebrun (1739-1824), man of letters, member of the institute and Duke of Plaisance, who began his career with Maupéou until the latter's fall in 1774. Copy on large paper from Holland with the figures of Gravelot in the 1st edition. Worn, rubbed caps and corners.
