Religious saint in ivory carved in the round. Standing, she holds a closed book in her right hand and the staff of the crook in the other. Sino-Portuguese, 17th century Height: 19.4 cm - Weight: 506 g (upper part of the crook missing) This heavy abbess statuette is to be compared with a Virgin of Calvary that belonged to the Portuguese architect Fernando Tavora as well as a Saint Isabella from a private collection in Porto (see Exhibition Lisbon 1991, A expansão portuguesa e a arte do marfim, Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian, cat.450 and 560, pp. 159 and 188).
