Alphonse de GISORS (1796-1866)], Recueil de calques de modèles d'architecture, [ca. 1825]. 1 oblong atlas: 74 f. on which are pasted 83 sheets of tracing paper, in which the author has very finely copied engravings selected from contemporary architectural books. Original restored binding. Restored red morocco basane spine titled "Calques - AG", original red boards preserved (wear, marks), edges of boards and corners in green paper refinished. Initials A G for Alphonse de Gisors on the spine, in line with chronological elements (end of the author's studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and publication dates of the copied books), by the presence of numerous models borrowed from his uncle, Guy de Gisors, and by the signature - the only one in this volume -, "de Gisors" in the lower right-hand corner of the tracing dedicated to the church of Saint-Vincent in Mâcon. This extraordinary set is one of the earliest surviving examples of the use of tracing paper, patented in 1809 by the Montgolfier family. Alphonse de Gisors, who was preparing for the Prix de Rome competition at the time, compiled a series of references borrowed from recent publications, including collections by Percier et Fontaine and Krafft, the works of Palladio, Durand's Choix d'édifices public, etc. The set documents the training of the artist in the use of tracing paper.
