Boze, Portrait of the Marquis de Galliﬀet, canvas, with restorations and accidents 132 x 100 CM - 51,9 x 39,4 IN. Simon Alexandre Jean, Marquis de Galliﬀet, came from an illustrious noble family, originally from Doubs, who had settled in Provence in the 16th century. He was born on June 22, 1716 in Le Tholonet and died on January 30, 1793 in Pisa. Simon-Alexandre was chamber president at the Parlement de Provence in Aix, inherited the Principality of Martigues and married Madeleine de Léotard d'Entrages. There is an unsigned letter on firmness from Simon Alexandre, sent to Versailles on the subject of the Jesuit trial before the French parliaments (1761-1770), attested in our portrait by the two volumes on the right, entitled "Annales Jésuitques" and "Compte rendu". He is the great-grandfather of the famous General de Galliﬀet (1830-1909). Our painting can be compared with the Portrait de Louis Stanislas Xavier de France, comte de Provence, future Louis XVIII (1755-1824). We find the same armchair, position of the model and arrangement of the books and drapery on the right (Signed canvas, 194 x 137.5 CM) on the art market (anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, December 12, 1990, no. 9, reproduced in color).
