GAUGUIN Paul (1848-1903)

Signed autograph letter addressed to Charles MORICE Tahiti, March 1897. 2 pages in-4 in ink on ruled paper (horizontal and vertical folds). Letter from Paul Gauguin to Charles Morice, poet, essayist and one of the main theorists of symbolism, in which he thanks him for sending him his brochure and does not hesitate to give his opinion: "Perfectly reasoned, very well written, perhaps very useful, but I would rather see what you announce at the head of the brochure [...] I must tell you that I had a few officers read Noa Noa manuscript and it was judged very favorably. The commander of the Dugay-Trocin introduced me to his furrier, the son of the publisher Delagrave doing his service. [...] He absolutely wants Noa Noa to be published. ...I still hope to see noa noa printed before I die." He ends by talking about his health "coming back better, that is, the courage to live and work. I have just sent Daniel a few works that must be worthy of my old works from Tahiti, unfortunately this crude art from Papua (as Mauclair says) does not have much chance for the future. Finally my life is organized here to live from very little and finally I will have the rest".
