HORAE.

[Heures à l'usage de Paris.] Paris, Philippe Pigouchet, 1488. In-8 (161 x 104 mm) 92 ff.n.ch., printed on vellum. Collation: a-l8 m4; green morocco, dishes decorated in the Duseuil style, spine ribbed, roulette on the cups, gilt edges (binding from 19th century). Extremely rare copy of the hours for Paris use, printed by Philippe Pigouchet. No edition mentioned by Brunet corresponds to this one, which is decorated with the large printer's mark on the title, the skeleton man (f. a2r) and 17 large engravings in the text, which is printed on 26 lines. The calendar is for 21 years and covers the years 1488 to 1508, the print finish indicates the print finish of January 15, 1494, "by Philippe Pigouchet, bookseller of the University of Paris in the rue de la Harpe near Saint Cosme". This edition has also escaped Fairfax-Murray, which indicates 16 September as the date of the first edition at Pigouchet's. "The earliest of Pigouchet's definitely recorded is an edition of 1488, Sept. 16" (Fairfax-Murray, introduction for the Books of Hours). Very nice copy, partially rubbed and with the letters painted red and illuminated at the time. Leaflet 'k2' is mistakenly marked 'i2'.
