MONTAIGNE, Michel de (1533-1592). The Essays of Michel the Lord of Montaigne. New edition, taken from the copy found after the decease of the Autheur, recovered & increased by a third in addition to the previous impressions. Paris: Abel l'Angelier, 1598. Important edition of the Essays. It is based on the posthumous edition of 1595, of which it integrates the last corrections made by Marie de Gournay on the autograph copy. It presents the definitive text and is prefaced by Marie de Gournay, as was the 1595 edition. She thus presents the text of the Essays considered as definitive. It is moreover the last edition in which Marie de Gournay took part. When Abel l'Angelier printed this new corrected edition, he decided to present it in a smaller format and printed it in a smaller number of copies than the 1595 edition. It is therefore much rarer. The title is decorated with a beautiful woodcut frame by Jean de Gourmont that the Angelier had already used in its in-4 editions of 1581-1583. Binding signed Koehler: midnight blue morocco, double cold cloth binding, spine ribbed, double cold cloth binding, gilt lettering and edges (slightly browned but nice copy with comfortable margins).
