Antonin Artaud.

Galapagos. The islands at the end of the world. Original etchings by Max Ernst. Paris, Louis Broder, 1955. In-8, calf bicolor, white for the upper plate, black for the lower plate, smooth back with mosaic title in bicolor letters, large decoration of golden arabesques and different black, white, fawn, pink and green calf mosaics on each plate, white and black suede linings and endpapers framed with blue and pink, then pink and fawn calf scrolls, gilt edges on witnesses, illustrated dust jacket preserved in one piece and folded at the top, illustrated cover in preserved grey paper, shirt, case (Paul Bonet, 1959). Beautiful book illustrated with 11 original etchings by Max Ernst, four of which are full page and the cover filled. Limited edition of 135 copies. One of the first 20 copies, signed by the painter and enriched with an original rubbing by Max Ernst (#6). In spite of the reservations sometimes expressed on the books too "licked" by Louis Broder, reservations which he echoes, François Chapon considers however that "this goldsmith work is by no means negligible. The contribution of the painters, as requested by its architect, provides brilliant successes" - at the forefront of which is the Galapagos: "Max Ernst's sardonic invention is perfectly designed to arouse the Galapagos, a land preserved by the conditions of its climate, a primitive reserve where Antonin Artaud sees the figuration of the "forbidden and lost" world of childhood. ... Broder is to be commended for having been the architect of such a fruitful rapprochement." Superb binding decorated by Paul Bonet with a virtuoso execution. (Capon, Le Peintre et le Livre, pp. 253-254 and 301: Coron, 50 illustrated books since 1947, 1988, no. 17: The Artist and the Book, 1860-1960, no. 101: Carnets Paul Bonet, no. 1278: "Closer to the spirit of Max Ernst").
