The work brings together 100 (of 103) large compositions modelled on Otto Vaenius' famous "Emblemata Horatiana" - each accompanied by a title and quatrain - a full-page portrait of the author, a false title bearing Daret's address, a repeated cul-de-lampe at the end of each part, and numerous woodcut initials. This luxurious work, composed at the request of Cardinal Mazarin for the instruction of the young King Louis XIV, is one of the most beautiful books published by the engraver Pierre Daret. Missing pages (33 and Jj), half a page torn out. Accidents to the spine, caps, corners, scratches and small cardboard tears; wetness, stains, freckles, tears and missing pages.
