Beschreibung

Of a characteristic form with a long spout and a scrolled handle terminated with a cast-bronze dragon head, finely decorated in vivid enamels depicting meandering lotus flowers and birds, the domed cover surmounted with a gilt knob. Provenance: private collection in Pennsylvania. Footnote: The Chinese cloisonne enamel dates from the reign of the Ming Xuande emperor (1426–35). The technique was introduced to China at that time via the western province of Yunnan, which under Mongol rule received an influx of Islamic people. The shape of this ewer, which was introduced to China in the early fifteenth century, also derives from Islamic metalwork. Dimensions: H: 20 in., (51 cm.) Very good. No dents or chips.
