WORKSHOP OF JAN BRUEGHEL THE ELDER (17th century) "The Adoration of the Three Wise Men" Oil on copper With collection number printed on paper, located in the lower left corner. Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) was one of the most outstanding painters of Flemish painting in the transition from the 16th to the 17th century. Son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder (ca. 1525/30 – 1569), he was able to create his own style, differentiating himself from that of his father, achieving notable success. Because of this, the Brueghels had an extensive workshop that produced orders of different quality to satisfy existing demand. The present work, based on an original composition by Jan Brueghel, brings together the characteristics of his works, although the author tends to show a certain caricature in his characters. In any case, it is very possible that it was made by a close follower of Jan Brueghel the Elder, surely working under his auspices, so it could be considered a work produced in his own workshop. A similar version of this Adoration of the Magi, matching in size and technique, is preserved in the Mayer van den Bergh museum in Antwerp, dated around 1600 - 06, and also referenced as the work of a follower (MMB.0061). We thank the Professor Fred G. Meijer for his assistance in cataloging this lot. Measurements: 21 x 32 cm
