A late Byzantine bowl with coloured glaze and ring stand, 12th - 14th century A.D. Bowl with a distinctive, hard break just above the centre. High, conically tapering ring stand ring, the base protruding slightly outwards. Above which, the lower section of the bowl extends towards the sharp break at an angle of approximately 45 degrees. The outside of this section glazed in beige only. The inside coloured with brown and green highlights, which stand out above an ornament incised with spirals (spirals in the quadrants of a circle divided by a cross). Above which, the upper part tapering slightly inwards, the rim slanting slightly upwards. The outer and inner rims embellished with incised decoration and glaze in the same colours. Tendrils on the outside, the inside with a zigzag pattern set between two horizontal lines. Height 10.2 cm, diameter approximately 14 cm. Apart from occasional minor spalling of the glaze, in fine condition and intact. A beautiful, distinguished piece of Late Byzantine earthenware. Provenance: Westphalian private collection, acquired in the Rhenish art trade during the 1990s. Condition: I - II
