Only a few copies with the original wrappers can be found, this is important because the suite was issued without a title page, so the title and imprint can only be found here. - "Carl Harnisch, born in Altenburg, Germany on January 1, 1800, worked as an artist and created designs for lithographs in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century. Originally apprenticed in carpentry and engraving in Germany, Harnisch immigrated to Philadelphia with Edward Schnabel in 1849. He gave drawing lessons, worked in the lithographic trade, and painted ceiling and wall murals, including that of the home of W. C. Swann (1512 Walnut Street). Known lithographs include "Reminiscences of a Fancy Dress Ball", in Philadelphia, February 1850 printed ca. 1850 by P. S. Duval. He also exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was a founder of the German Artists' Association." (Library Company of Philadelphia. Philadelphia on Stone. Besitzeintrag. - Frühe Übersetzung des Romans Satyricon des Titus Petronius Arbiter (14-66) mit den Ergänzungen von François Nodot (1650-1710) im lateinisch-französischen Paralleltext. Nach der aufsehenerregenden Wiederentdeckung und Veröffentlichung um 1664 kam es zu einer verstärkten Suche nach weiteren Fragmenten des nur teilüberlieferten Werks. Bekannt sind vor allem die Ergänzungen von Pierre Lignage de Vaucienne (um 1610-1681), die unter dem Namen seines Herausgebers Nodot (Rotterdam 1692) sofort große Aufmerksamkeit erlangten, weil Nodot sie als "echte Petroniusfragmente" ausgab, die angeblich bei Belgrad 1688 entdeckt worden waren. Rasch kamen Zweifel auf und Nodot wurde literarisch hart angegriffen. Gegen diese Angriffe verteidigte sich Nodot mit seiner hier als Anhang zu Band I abgedruckten Contre-critique. - Titelbl. verso altgestempelt. Fliegende Vorsätze mit hs. Annotationen, einer mit kl. Ausriss. Etwas gebräunt und vereinzelt leicht fleckig. Gute Exemplare. 2 vols. With engraved frontispiece and 9 engraved plates, 2 of which folded. Mottled cont. leather with rich gilt decoration and gilt label on spine, red edges and marbled endpapers (lower capitals with manuscript library labels, slightly rubbed). - From the library of Baron von Laßberg, with manuscript ownership inscription. - Early translation of the novel Satyricon by Titus Petronius Arbiter (14-66) with the additions by François Nodot (1650-1710) in the Latin-French parallel text. After the sensational rediscovery and publication around 1664, there was an intensified search for further fragments of the only partially surviving work. Best known are the additions by Pierre Lignage de Vaucienne (c. 1610-1681), which immediately attracted great attention under the name of his editor Nodot (Rotterdam 1692), because Nodot passed them off as "genuine Petronius fragments", supposedly discovered near Belgrade in 1688. Doubts quickly arose and Nodot came under harsh literary attack. Nodot defended himself against these attacks with his Contre-critique printed here as an appendix to Volume I. - Title-pages stamped on verso.
