A wheellock pistol (puffer) with rich bone inlays, probably Augsburg, circa 1580 Two-stage barrel, octagonal to round, with slightly swamped muzzle. Smooth bore in 12 mm calibre. The upper side of barrel with engraved acanthus leaf decoration. Lock with covered, external wheel as well as safety lever. Spring-loaded pan, release button replaced. Beside the wheel struck locksmith's mark "Jagdhorn". Full stock made of walnut wood with lavish inlays of engraved and blackened bone. Profuse decoration of fine flower tendrils, borders with acanthus leaves and braided décor. Pommel decorated with a male mascaron. Wooden ramrod with iron tip and iron thread socket. Length 56 cm. Comes with a matching Italian iron wheellock key, circa 1600. Double-sided head with two square-section keys of different sizes. Stock with baluster decoration and movable suspension loop, below medallion with tracery décor and screwdriver blade. Length 19 cm. The "Jagdhorn" marking is often to be found on wheellock weapons that also bear an Augsburg acceptance mark; yet occasionally, it is found on Nuremberg weapons as well. Cf.
