Beschreibung

Flemish school; 17th century. "Annunciation". Oil on copper. Measurements: 21 x 16.5 cm; 31 x 26.5 cm (frame). An indeterminate background makes us focus the attention on the figures, placed in the foreground, as it corresponds to this theme following the approaches that arose in the Council of Trent. Mary, dressed in a red tunic, blue cloak and white veil covering her hair, is seated at a lectern with a book, making the customary gesture of surprise with her hands before the arrival of the Archangel on the right. The clothes of this second personage (the Archangel Gabriel) appear to be moved by the wind, and his figure emanates a light of its own. The Annunciation is one of the most frequently depicted themes in Christian art because it marks the Incarnation of Christ as man and God, with Mary maintaining her purity and virginal state, points of great theological importance. Thus, throughout the evolution of the different styles in European art, there is a great variety of models and different details according to style, school and period. The present work clearly relates to Baroque works in terms of the palette chosen, the iconography (with details retained from earlier traditions), the contrasts of light, etc.
