Belcher übernahm das Kommando über das Schiff, nachdem Kapitän Beechey in Valparaíso erkrankt war. Die Expedition war ausgesandt worden, um die Pazifikküste Nord- und Südamerikas und das Pazifische Becken zu erforschen.
