Martin Schmidt zugeschr./attr. to - (*) A rare, oval, single-handed Prague Renaissance pre-balance neck watch with hour strike Dimensions 51 x 77 mm, circa 1580, Weight 153 g, Origin Süddeutschland/Tschechien Case: Brass, remains of fire gilding, engraved silver caseband, openwork front and back lid with hinges, rear bell. Dial: Silver, engraved, remains of polychrome enamel inlays, single blued steel hand. Movm.: Full plate movement, barrel for chain/fusee, barrel for striking train, 1 richly decorated hammer, iron locking plate with internal teeth, verge escapement, two-arm iron balance without balance spring. Other than a silver ornamental ribbon on the case band the case shows neither engraving nor hallmarked. The hinged front and back covers are openwork and represent gothic style rose windows. The silver dial features inlaid Roman hours I-XII and Arabic hours 13-24 as well as applied hour dots for reading the time at night. The centre is extensively ornamented with engraving and traces of polychrome champlevé enamelling showing a flower-filled vase and a bird fluttering above it. The early Renaissance style movement has the same oval shape as the case. It is marked "M.S." with an upside down goblet between the initials and van be attributed to Martin Schmidt in Prague.
