OPERA - FRANCHETTI Alberto (1860 - 1942) - Complete and unpublished autograph musical manuscript Complete and unpublished autograph musical manuscript of the opera "Don Bonaparte". This is the complete sketch of the Master's last opera, dated between January 6, 1936 (Prelude) and September 10, 1938 (last page, after the exclamation "Laus Deo!"). There is a date at the end of the II act: Viareggio, September 17, 1937 (p. 255), and in the III act: Viareggio, April 8, 1938. "Don Bonaparte" (also known as "Don Napoleone") is a comic opera with a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano. In the 1930s, Franchetti retired in Versilia and was invited by his friend and the playwright Forzano to compose music for his comedy "Don Bonaparte", written in 1926 and reworked in 1931 for the great actor Ermete Zacconi. Franchetti began composing in 1939 and finished it in 1941. Due to Italy's entry into the war, the opera was not performed. The comedy, however, was translated into a film directed by Flavio Calzavara in the same 1941 and won the Volpi Cup for Ermete Zacconi for the best male performance at Venice Film Festival. 320 pp. In-4 large (35x26 cm), dense with corrections, cancellations, and remakes. Some parts replaced with cut-outs of sections glued to the pages. Beautiful binding in half cloth and red morocco with five nerves and gold title on the spine, marbled endpapers with silver label of provenance 'Bonynge Sutherland Collection'."
