ANTONI CLAVÉ. "Punt negre-blau". (d) Mixed media on paper Signed and dated 1991. Provenance: Joan Gaspar Gallery, Barcelona, 1995; private collection, Spain. 40x25 cm In 1972, invited by the newspaper Mainichi, Clavé travelled to Japan to attend an exhibition of his work at Matsuzakaya gallery. That first contact with Asia had a deep impact on Clavé. However, in his subsequent travel to New York, the graffiti of the metropolis had an even greater influence on his work than the attraction of Japan's millenary culture. In 1986 Clavé visited Japan again for a travelling retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in Tokyo, the Museum of Art in Osaka, the Yamanashi-Ken Museum and the Open Air Museum in Hakone. The stay inspired a prolific series of paintings which he presented that same year at Yoshii Gallery in Paris, and in 1987 at Sala Gaspar in Barcelona. Under the title ‘Retour du Japon’ (Return from Japan), Clavé was inspired by calligraphy and traditional stamps, integrating them into a gestural treatment of the space of the pictures and the paper, with a dimension of the internal perspective of the works. In good condition. Painted metal frame.
